Arya’s Oh The Places She’ll Go 1st Birthday Party (with free printables)

My sweet baby Arya turned one! First birthdays are so special. Since we were in the midst of building a new home, I knew her birthday party would be the last party we would have at home for a very long time. We invited all our families and close friends to her party and since it was on a long weekend, we were spoiled with all her out-of-town baby cousins in attendance. We’ve been planning this for a long time and we didn’t want Mackenzie who is 3 to feel left out from the celebrations. In the morning of the event, my husband presented to her a hostess gift and had her promise us that she will be the best hostess ever to all her family and friends. She loved the idea and felt so grown up. We steered clear of any possible jealousy – possible disaster averted!

Her sister, Mackenzie’s first birthday theme was “Mackenzie in ONEderland”, so we wanted to make Arya’s a special and creative one too. We decided on Oh the Places She’ll go by Dr. Seuss. Growing up, my husband and I loved Dr. Seuss so we knew this was the perfect theme.

We hung hot air balloons and clouds all around our deck.I created hot air balloons from paper lanterns. I ordered these colourful lanterns from These were extremely easy to make and all you need are lanterns, twine/string, and mini baskets. Between finalizing house plans and packing, I procrastinated and ran out of time to source cute mini baskets. I was desperate and settled on mini white boxes from the dollar store. I used leftover scrapbooking paper to cut out triangles and glued them on with a hot glue gun.

The clouds (no pictures sorry!) were made from tulle. Extremely easy to make, follow the tutorial here.

Tassels were made from tissue paper and were another easy decoration. Here’s a great tutorial.

Birthday parties seem to fly past so quickly. I wanted a sweet keepsake for Arya to have when she is older. I decided to get the Dr. Seuss birthday book and use it as a guestbook for everyone to sign. It was a big hit and the book is extremely adorable.

Of course, I made the banner, food tags, favour tags, and signs. Keep reading. All printables are below!

I took the easy route and it was the best route ever. I went to Chapters and purchased My Busy Books. They are so great as they’re the perfect sized books that come with character toys to play with. I love Chapters and it was my one stop shop for party favours. The best part? Free gift wrapping!!

The warm sun and large crowd called for a BBQ. With over 70 guests to feed, we thought it was the easiest to have a BBQ with hamburgers, smokies, salads, noodles and mac and cheese.

I also made oreo pops and they were extremely easy to make. The secret is that it’s all about the packaging (isn’t that with everything though? :))

What you’ll need:

  • double stuffed oreos
  • white sticks (from Michaels)
  • white chocolate
  • colourful pareils (I got mine at Bulk Barn – my fave place)
  • parchment paper

How to make them:

  • Carefully open your oreos apart ensuring they won’t break. Place the stick inside the oreo and sandwich them back together.
  • Put them in the freezer for 5 minutes to harden and set
  • Melt your white chocolate in the microwave inside a tall narrow glass, in 15 second increments so it won’t burn
  • Dip your oreos in the white chocolate ensuring it gets an even coating and immediate dip one side in the colourful pareils
  • Place on parchment paper to harden or in fridge

Red velvet cake was from Cupcakes. They always make such delicious cakes and an easy ordering process. We entertained the idea of a fondant cake (as that’s what we’ve done in the past, but my go-to baker was fully booked. Maybe better luck next time!)

Did you know on your first birthday, Thrifty’s Foods gives you a free birthday cake? We had a tasty vanilla cake from them and it was so delicious!\

With almost 20 kids in attendance, I wanted to keep them busy outside so we hired a bouncy castle for the older kids and had an inflatable pool filled with plastic balls for the babies.
